Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) is proud to announce Sir Robert Cohan CBE: Beyond the M25, an event to honour the profound impact and enduring legacy of one of modern dance’s true pioneers.

This special occasion, taking place in Leeds on 7 June 2024, is in collaboration with the Sir Robert Cohan Dance Legacy (RCDL) and Phoenix Dance Theatre, showcasing Cohan’s immeasurable influence on the dance world, specifically outside of the capital.

Sir Robert Cohan CBE: Beyond the M25 serves as a prelude to the upcoming centenary of Cohan’s birth and will comprise various ways to explore his influence on contemporary dance in the UK. The event will feature an array of activities, including a screening of the documentary film ‘Another Place’ by Darshan Singh Bhuller, Cohan-related practical studio-based activities, a masterclass and discussion panels.

The event will end with a reworked performance of Forest (1977) in the evening from 6pm, open to the public, performed by NSCD students and dancers from Phoenix Dance Theatre. Northern School of Contemporary Dance CEO and Principal Sharon Watson MBE DL says:

“We are honoured to host this event to pay homage to a visionary whose influence continues to shape the landscape of contemporary dance. It promises to be a celebration of creativity, innovation and the enduring power of dance, both locally in Leeds and across the UK.

“Sir Robert Cohan played an important role in the birth of NSCD; he provided support and guidance to our founding Director and Principal Nadine Senior MBE and his inspiration and influence can be felt deeply in our school's faculty and curriculum.”
