White & Givan launches National Dance Workforce Surveys to help shape the future of professional dance careers in Scotland
Share
White & Givan has launched two national surveys as part of the development of Dancers Connected, a new initiative exploring how collaborative working across the sector can better support professional freelance dancers to sustain long-term performing careers, while building stronger partnerships across the wider network of dance teachers and practitioners to nurture future talent, grow audiences and collectively strengthen Scotland's dance sector.
The surveys seek to understand the realities of sustaining a career as a dancer or dance teacher in Scotland today. They will also explore whether touring companies, such as White & Givan, engage sufficiently with the teachers and practitioners – both paid and voluntary, and across all dance forms.
Scotland produces exceptional dance talent, yet many dancers face increasing challenges in maintaining professional performing careers after graduation. Freelance work, insecure income, geographical barriers, limited opportunities for regular professional training and balancing multiple roles are common experiences across the sector.
The findings will help inform the future development of Dancers Connected, and contribute to wider sector research, reports and materials that support greater visibility and understanding of Scotland's dance workforce and ecology.
The surveys are now open and White & Givan is encouraging responses from:
- Professional dancers currently based in Scotland, or those who have trained or been professionally active in Scotland, regardless of dance form, employment status or career stage.
- Dance teachers and practitioners working across all dance forms and settings, whether paid or voluntary.
Both surveys take approximately 15–20 minutes to complete.
