September at Sadler’s Wells

The final weekend of The Music is Black Festival from East Bank comes to Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in September with activity on The Dance Floor at Sadler’s Wells East on Saturday 12 – Sunday 13 September.

On Saturday 12 September, choreographer Dannielle “Rhimes” LeCointe responds to the theme Black to the Future with a curated club night Soul System: Afrofuture Funk, featuring live performances, singing and music from legendary DJs. Associate Artistic Director of ZooNation: The Kate Prince Company, Rhimes is the choreographer of smash hit show Ebony Scrooge, which returns to Sadler’s Wells East this Christmas. Fly Kid takes over The Dance Floor with a daytime party for children and families in the afternoon. On Sunday 13 September, Poetic Funk – a DJ collective led by Mark Alexander close the festival with an Afrofuturism-inspired set

Free Dance Floor taster classes will take place on The Dance Floor on Saturday 5 September as part the Greenwich & Docklands International Festival, a vibrant celebration of movement, music, and community through the Dancing Cities programme.

Free lunchtime dance classes return to The Dance Floor from Monday 14 September, including Afro-Caribbean Fusion (Mondays 1-2pm), Funky Social Dance (Wednesdays 1-2pm), Family Freestyle (Thursdays 10-10:45am / 11-11:45am) and Reggae & Soul Line Dance (Fridays 1-2pm).

On Saturday 26 September AkomaAsa Arts presents a community takeover of The Dance Floor, a family focused event celebrating African, Caribbean and Western dance traditions, bringing people together using drumming and dance.

At Sadler’s Wells Theatre, San Francisco Ballet presents Mere Mortals, featuring choreography by Aszure Barton alongside a live performance by acclaimed British electronic music producer and DJ Floating Points, marking the company's first visit to England since Tamara Rojo took up post as Artistic Director (Wednesday 9 – Saturday 12 September). Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns with two programmes New Works and Legacy showcasing the best of the pioneering company’s repertoire, both featuring Ailey’s iconic Revelations (Tuesday 15 – Saturday 19 September).

English National Ballet presents two world premieres by Jae Man Joo and Micaela Taylor as part of a triple bill that will be accompanied live by the English National Ballet Philharmonic (Thursday 24 September - Saturday 3 October).

At Sadler’s Wells East, National Dance Company Wales presents a new double bill featuring work by Theo Clinkard and Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Alesandra Seutin (Thursday 24 September - Saturday 26 September).

At the Peacock Theatre, Yllana presents Flamenc Oh!! a brand-new production co-commissioned by Sadler’s Wells, combining world-class flamenco with comedy and physical theatre accompanied by live music (Wednesday 30 September - Saturday 10 October).

Generation: Dance features actor, Sekou Diaby travelling across the country to investigate how dance affects young lives for the better, demonstrating the importance of dance to help young people explore the world and understand themselves.

New Adventures presents Quiet Revolutions, made to mark ten years of the company’s Overture programme, capturing community dance artists navigating financial precariousness and personal doubt.

Return which won Best Film by Young Artists (21 and under) at Dance Digital, Sadler’s Wells’ dance film festival will be available as part of Dance Digital Presents. The film follows two young women as they take an ordinary bike ride through country lanes, as their journey transforms into something more abstract. Dance Digital Presents is a curated selection of films from the festival available for free, released for a time-limited period on Sadler’s Wells Digital Stage.

100 Years Young Backstage Pass with Rambert goes behind the scenes as the company prepares for the opening night of their 100-year anniversary show, This Is Rambert at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in June. Featuring Rambert Artistic Director Benoit Swan Pouffer and dancer Archie White as they go through a double-show day, from the dressing rooms to the stage.
