Parable Dance, a community interest company based in Brighton, has unveiled the Inclusive Dance Directory (inclusivedancedirectory.com), a national platform designed to unite disabled and non-disabled dance artists and companies like never before.
This new resource will serve as a central hub for sharing opportunities, resources, and biographies, and will keep members connected with a regular fortnightly newsletter. The launch of this national platform is a milestone in Parable Dance’s journey, coming just three days after the celebration of their 5th anniversary.
Parable Dance have both local roots and a national reach. From their base in Brighton, they offer weekly dance classes to children and adults with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), lead outreach workshops across the South East, and serve as a SEND short breaks provider for Brighton and Hove Council. But Parable Dance's impact extends beyond Brighton.
Nationally, they have been championing inclusion, spearheading two vital networks and an online mentoring program that connect disabled and non-disabled dancers. They offer consultancy and mentoring to other dance organisations and produce resources to support the inclusive dance community. The driving force behind these initiatives is Artistic Director Natasha Britton BCA, who has nearly 25 years of experience in inclusive dance.
Reflecting on the journey that led to the creation of the Inclusive Dance Directory, Britton shares, “During the pandemic, we saw the power of community when we brought together the inclusive dance sector through the creation of a resource film. The positive response was overwhelming, and it became clear that we needed to create something permanent to keep this community connected. The directory was born from this idea, and the feedback has been phenomenal. It’s great to see how this platform is already making a difference.”
Parable Dance is also keen to acknowledge the crucial support from Arts Council England, without which this project would not have been possible. Britton adds, “This directory is a gift to the entire dance community. Whether you’re a student diving into research, a participant searching for a class, a dancer hunting for the next work opportunity, or an enthusiast eager to catch the latest show—this platform is for you. It’s for anyone who is passionate about dance and dedicated to equity.”
The Inclusive Dance Directory is now live, and Parable Dance invites everyone in the dance community—and beyond—to explore, connect, and be inspired.
