Kuweni is a Sri Lankan contemporary dance production inspired by the story of Kuweni, the first mythical queen of Sri Lanka. Reimagining her narrative through a contemporary feminist lens, the work explores themes of power, love, betrayal, resilience, and gender inequality. Moving beyond traditional portrayals of Kuweni as a figure of tragedy and abandonment, the production centres her voice, agency, and humanity. Through evocative choreography and visual storytelling, Kuweni draws connections between her experiences and the ongoing realities faced by women in patriarchal societies today.
Kuweni was originally developed as part of Sithumini's Master's research in Public Arts & Performance at London Metropolitan University and premiered at the university's Postgraduate Showcase in 2024. The production emerged from a desire to re-examine a significant female figure in Sri Lankan cultural history and explore how historical narratives continue to shape contemporary understandings of gender, power, and identity. Drawing from somatic dance practices, feminist theory, and Sri Lankan cultural heritage, the work investigates the complex intersections between mythology, history, and lived experience.
Rather than presenting Kuweni solely as a victim of abandonment, the production seeks to restore her agency and recognise her significance as a woman whose actions altered the course of history. Through dance, Kuweni creates a platform for dialogue about female representation, cultural memory, and social transformation. By revisiting this legendary story from a female perspective, Kuweni invites audiences to reflect on identity, justice, and empowerment, while giving new life to a narrative that continues to resonate across cultures and generations.
Kuweni was selected through an international adjudicated process to be presented at the 2026 DUMBO Dance Festival, produced by WHITE WAVE Dance in New York City. The production was performed at Taylor Dance East Theatre, New York, as part of the festival's 25th Anniversary Programme, which showcases innovative contemporary dance works by emerging and established choreographers from around the world. Selection for the festival followed a competitive international open call, with participating artists chosen by a professional panel based on artistic excellence, originality, and choreographic merit.
Created and choreographed by Sithumini Amarasingha, Kuweni represented Sri Lankan contemporary dance on an international stage, bringing a distinctly South Asian feminist perspective to audiences in the United States.
Following its development through research and performance, KUWENI will make its public UK presentation on 20 November 2026 at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Theatre, London, as a featured production within Dancing Sri Lanka 2026: Myth, Memory & Feminine Voices.
