Fundamentally Dance has announced the launch of the Fundamentally Dance International Film Festival (FDIFF), a new international festival dedicated exclusively to dance on camera. Taking place on 28 May 2027 at Lanterns Studio Theatre in London, the inaugural event will celebrate innovation at the intersection of dance and cinema, creating opportunities for artists to share their work and connect with the wider industry.

As more artists explore the creative possibilities of screen dance, dedicated platforms for exhibition, recognition and professional exchange remain limited. FDIFF aims to address this gap, bringing together filmmakers, choreographers and creative practitioners through live screenings, filmmaker Q&As, industry networking and awards.

Dance on camera offers possibilities beyond the conventions of live performance, allowing artists to reimagine space, time and the body through the language of film. Combining movement with cinematic storytelling, screen dance can reach audiences beyond the theatre, cross geographical and cultural boundaries, and create lasting records of artistic expression.

Jamiel Devernay-Laurence, Founder and CEO of Fundamentally Dance, says: “Dance on camera needs no translation. It is a story told entirely in movement — one that can be watched by anyone, anywhere, forever. The Fundamentally Dance International Film Festival exists to give that work the global stage it deserves.”

The festival welcomes international submissions across a range of formats and dance styles. Eligible films must have been created within the last five years, with music videos accepted where dance is the primary creative element.

Categories include Dance Short, Narrative Dance Film and Experimental Dance Film. Seven awards will recognise achievement across the medium, including Best Film, Best Narrative Dance Film, Best Experimental Dance Film, Best Dance Short, Best Choreography, Best Cinematography and Best Dance Documentary. The first place prize winner will receive £1,000, with a £250 prize for the runner-up. For Fundamentally Dance, the festival represents an expansion of its work beyond the live stage.

Founded in 2023, the independent dance production company is known for Ballet Nights and is developing The Brown Suite, a full-length dance theatre production inspired by the music of James Brown, Etta James and Sam Cooke. Through FDIFF, Fundamentally Dance aims to establish a new international platform for screen dance, supporting artistic discovery, encouraging collaboration and bringing the possibilities of dance on camera to wider audiences.
