Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Eliot Smith Dance (ESD) is making waves once again with their latest interdisciplinary collaboration, MERGING — a bold new performance work that draws profound connections between the landscapes and communities of the North East of England and northern Denmark. Set against the dramatic backdrop of Vendsyssel, North Jutland, MERGING brings together contemporary dance, live original music composed by Danish artist Liv Vester Larsen, and visual art by Nanna Rosenfeldt‑Olsen.

The project unfolds through a series of site-specific performances and workshops in August 2025, inviting audiences and local participants to engage with the environment and culture in innovative ways. What makes MERGING especially resonant is the striking symmetry between the coastal landscapes and communities of North East England and those of Denmark. From the windswept dunes of Northumberland to the rugged shores of Jutland, Eliot Smith Dance explores themes of identity, place, and human connection — uniting two distant yet kindred regions through artistic expression.

Choreographer and Creative Director Eliot Smith reflects: “The North East and Vendsyssel share a raw, honest beauty — in their landscapes and their people. MERGING is a celebration of these shared qualities and a chance to build meaningful cultural bridges through dance, music, and art.”

In line with its strong environmental values, Eliot Smith Dance is undertaking the journey to Denmark using ferry, train, and bus, deliberately avoiding air travel. This sustainable touring approach underscores the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint while nurturing international collaborations.

The project features dancers Olivia Kirk and Yamit Salazar, who bring fresh energy to Eliot Smith’s choreography, supported by the rich soundscape and visual elements contributed by Larsen and Rosenfeldt‑Olsen.

MERGING performances will take place at Åsen Teater in Jerslev on 29 and 30 August, preceded by movement and environmental workshops at Maskinhallen, Frederikshavn from 23 to 27 August.

Eliot Smith Dance continues to champion the North East’s vibrant arts scene on both national and international stages, and is a recipient of the Green Dance Award 2022 from One Dance UK.
