In 2024 The National Lottery Heritage Fund awarded the arts charity £76,698 to run a project called Call and Response.
The team explored three local and global dance styles: breakdance, Northumbrian clog dance and Cecchetti ballet
Through workshops and events, people across the region learned about the history of the dances along with the influences and characteristics they have in common and had the opportunity to share their own dance stories and traditions in a digital archive.
The project has brought new people into the building and forged lasting partnerships that will help support a thriving future for dance.
Dance City’s Senior Fundraising Manager, Rachel Fenton, said: “Widening the practice of dance educators in the region to include heritage skills was a really big part of making the organisation sustainable.”
