Young Creatives Update

22 May 2020

One Dance UK is proud to lead on Young Creatives – a development programme for aspiring young choreographers, delivered in partnership with Royal Opera House (ROH) and Rambert. This year, from a large number of excellent applications received from young people from right across the UK, the panel selected eight participants to take part in this year’s programme. In February – prior to the current lockdown, our Young Creatives 2020 cohort gathered at Dance Hub, Birmingham, to take part in an exciting and inspiring launch day where they met our creative team, made up of Creative Lead Rhian Robbins and Mentors Liam Francis (Rambert), Nathalie Harrison and Tom Whitehead (ROH), and Gareth Woodward (freelance dance artist). Each participant had the opportunity to explore a range of movement ideas and learn from the creative team and from each other.

Following the launch day, the Young Creatives continued to work in their own communities with their dancers to develop their choreographic ideas, with support and input from their mentors, with the aim of creating a final piece to be performed at ROH in June as part of its Next Generation festival. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit and lockdown came into place, rehearsing with their dancers of course became impossible for the Young Creatives. Like many events up and down the country, the final performance sadly had to be cancelled. Despite these challenges, we were astounded by the positivity, resilience and commitment of these amazing young people who have all chosen to continue on their creative journeys – albeit in a different way than planned! Over the coming weeks, our Young Creatives 2020 cohort will take part in online creative workshops led by our creative team, including a special session led by Sarah Dowling, the acclaimed choreographer and movement director! During the online sessions, and independently, they will work to create a special piece of ‘social distance’ online choreography, to be showcased at this year’s U.Dance Digital Festival in July. We can’t wait to see what these talented and creative young people come up with!
