The Place Online continues
London’s boldest dance theatre is going online with a digital offer for audiences!
After overwhelmingly positive reactions to their online programme of streamed full length dance performances, launched on 30 April, The Place is pleased to now announce further dates and shows.
4 June – The Headwrap Diaries by Uchenna Dance
Set within a South London hair-salon called BE U Tiful, The Head Wrap Diaries gives you front row seats to watch, interact with and be immersed in a journey from childhood to the present day, told through a unique blend of house, waacking and vogue fused with African and contemporary dance, accompanied by a specially commissioned soundtrack of Afro house, folk, electronic dance music, jazz and Ghana gospel. Three fierce, clever and witty female characters take us through stories of community, heritage, womanhood, friendship, and most importantly, hair.
11 June – Avant Garde Dance & The Place present Tony Adigun’s Fagin’s Twist
Filmed at the British Council Showcase in Edinburgh 2017, Dickens’ Oliver Twist is seen in a new light, as Tony Adigun’s Avant Garde Dance flips our expectations of five familiar characters in this untold story of a notorious and complex villain. Touring nationally and internationally ever since, it imagines Fagin’s youth, driven by greed and ambition in the face of overwhelming poverty. The streets are a place of little comfort and fairy-tale endings are hard to find in this poignant coming-of-age dance theatre presented in unmatched hip hop contemporary style.
Shows are streamed on The Place’s website every Thursday at 7pm and will be available until the following Monday 10pm. (BEAT will only be available to live stream on the evening, for music copyright reasons). All screenings are framed by a short introduction from the artist, and audiences will have the opportunity to donate to support The Place and the featured artists during this difficult time.
