The Place announces open call for 2021 programming
The Place, London’s creative powerhouse for dance development, has been leading the way in dance training, creation and performance for 50 years, committed to a vision of powering imagination through dance, championing new ideas and embracing risks.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, dance makers as well as venues are grappling with many questions about the future and about how dance may help us respond to the big questions facing us. Embracing this unique moment as an opportunity open the programme to a wider pool of artists, The Place will use an Open Call to find work to populate its spring programme.
The 2021 spring programme will consist of three curated weekend festivals, which will take place both live and online. Each one will focus on a question:
· “How can we care for each other?” 28 – 31 January
· “How do we tune into sensation?” 18 – 21 February (in partnership with Chisenhale Dance)
· “What does the future look like?” 11 – 14 March
The Place is seeking live and digital performance works which respond in some way to these questions, and is inviting applications from artists who wish to propose their work.
Work should clearly respond to one of the themes and should be choreographic or have movement at its core.
Works can be of any length, can be live or digital and can utilise formats such as outdoor work, durational work or 1-2-1 experiences as long as it can be presented within current COVID guidelines. The Place is keen to hear from people it hasn’t worked with before, and is particularly keen to hear from artists that are currently underrepresented in the dance sector, including but not limited to, disabled artists, artists from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, artists that are racially minoritized, artists with care responsibilities and artists that are LGBTQIA+
Fees between £500 and £1500 are available. We expect to programme between 3-5 events for each weekend at a scale that is achievable within the finances on offer.
The Place is also calling on its dance community and its expertise as an audience. If you have seen a work online that you think would be great to include in our spring programme and is eligible, please send a message to email@example.com with a link to the work.
Artists based outside of the UK and students are not eligible to apply. Digital work must have been created specifically for the format it is disseminated in (archive recordings of performances will not be included).
Applications will close midday on 9 October 2020.
The selection panel is made up of representatives from The Place and partner organisations Chisenhale Dance Space and King’s College London, to ensure the spring programme is diverse in form, content and the artists we are working with.
