Choreographer and director Tamara McLorg was presented with the Jane Attenborough Dance UK Industry Award at the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards at The Place on 25 January 2016.

The Jane Attenborough Dance UK Industry Award honours an individual working behind the scenes who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to move dance forward and enable the art form to thrive. The winner is chosen following an open nomination process, making the winner someone who is truly respected and admired by their colleagues.

Choreographer Royston Maldoom OBE said: “Tamara has worked tirelessly in and for dance in the UK and internationally for over three decades and is one of dance’s unsung heroines, admired by people around the world. Tamara has probably worked with more youth groups than anyone else in the field. She has motivated many young people to follow a successful career as performers, choreographers, dance teachers and community dance artists. She is and always has been a trailblazer going where other fear or care not to tread.”

Tamara McLorg has taught and choreographed extensively within the UK and internationally, creating works across Europe, Africa, the USA and South America. She was a Senior Lecturer at Middlesex University in London from 1994 to 2008, with her main subjects being Community Dance, Choreography and Cultural Identity, and was awarded numerous research awards. Her interest in education and community dance has led to her mentoring and training young dance artists within a community dance context worldwide. She was an external examiner for Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (John Moores University), and has written papers for various international dance conferences and symposiums. At present Tamara is Artistic Advisor, in collaboration with composer, Christopher Benstead, for Ithuba Dance in South Africa and they are consultants for Danza para la Convivencia in Mexico.

Tamara said: “I feel honoured and very humble to have been awarded The Jane Attenborough Dance UK Industry Award. It is as though I have been given an extraordinary gift and would like to thank everyone that has nominated me. Throughout my career in dance, that has taken many various roles, I have not travel alone but have been supported by many extraordinary people. From my original teachers who inspired me with their wisdom and knowledge, dancers and other artists who so graciously helped me create and all the wonderful community dancers from many cultures who put faith and trust in my choreography. Along with the art of dance they have enriched my life. I share this gift with them.”
