Opportunities for Latin and Ballroom dance teachers who are Passionate about Inclusive Dance

Rashmi Becker recently set up London’s first dedicated inclusive Latin and Ballroom dance company, Step Change Studios. Following 20 years working in social care as well as training in dance and caring for her disabled brother, Rashmi set the company up as a response to the lack of opportunities for disabled people to participate in Latin and Ballroom dance. Following a grant, which is supporting some delivery, Rashmi has been heartened by the breadth of organisations wanting Step Change Studios to provide inclusive dance opportunities as well as the response from disabled people wanting to learn.

Step Change Studios is pan-disability supporting all ages and abilities to participate. Examples of work include teaching a 12-week Latin and Ballroom courses in community centres for older people, preparing people with learning disabilities to perform a ballroom dance routine in community festival, and Ballroom-inspired chair-based dance in care settings for people with limited mobility.

The response and growth has been such that Step Change Studios is now looking for more excellent teachers with Latin and Ballroom experience. As well as professional dance qualifications, the qualities that are essential are: passionate about supporting everyone to dance; reliable and dedicated; fun and creative – adapting dance to different needs and abilities; empathetic; and personable. There are a number of opportunities starting from September (during the day, Monday-Friday), including supporting older people and people with visual impairments to dance. Step Change Studios will support and brief teachers on working with particular groups of participants.
