One Dance UK members among National Dance Award nominees
The Dance Section of the Critics’ Circle has announced the nominees for the 18th National Dance Awards, many of whom are One Dance UK members.
The Stef Stefanou Award nominees for Outstanding Company include English National Ballet, Northern Ballet and Scottish Ballet, all members of One Dance UK. English National Ballet also receives a nomination for performers Francesca Velicu and Isaac Hernández; whilst Scottish Ballet is nominated again for performers Bethany Kingsley-Garner, Francesca Hayward and Christopher Harrison. Choreographers Crystal Pite and Kenneth Tindall are nominated for their work for Scottish Ballet and Northern Ballet respectively.
Performers for One Dance UK member The Royal Ballet, Marcelino Sambé, Kristen McNally, Yasmine Naghdi, Zenaida Yanowsky and Francesca Hayward receive further nominations, as do choreographers Pite and Liam Scarlett for their work for the company. Fellow member Birmingham Royal Ballet receives a nomination in the name of performer Brandon Lawrence. Rambert’s Miguel Altunaga and Richard Alston Dance Company’s Liam Riddick also receive nominations, with both companies also members of One Dance UK.
Ballet Cymru, Rosie Kay Dance Company and Vincent Dance Theatre, organisational members of One Dance UK, are all nominated in the category of Best Independent Dance Company. Performers Antonia Grove and Shelley Eva Haden receive nominations in the category of Outstanding Female Performance (Modern) for performances with Vincent Dance Theatre and Rosie Kay Dance company respectively.
Akram Khan, of One Dance UK member Akram Khan Company, receives a nomination for Best Classical Choreography, recognising his critically praised choreography for a new adaptation of Giselle, performed by English National Ballet. Principal dancer Alina Cojocaru is nominated for her appearance as Giselle, and James Streeter for the role of Albrecht. Composer Vincenzo Lamagna receives a nomination for his compositional contribution.
Nominees for Best Modern Choreography include Michael Asante and One Dance UK member Kenrick Sandy, for Blak Whyte Gray (Boy Blue Entertainment); and fellow members Matthew Bourne for The Red Shoes (New Adventures) and Michael Clark for To a simple, rock ‘n’ roll…song. (Michael Clark Company). Michael Clark Company also receives a nomination for performer Harry Alexander, whilst fellow organisational member Scottish Dance Theatre receives a nomination for performer Botis Seva.
One Dance UK Trailblazer Starter, Dickson Mbi, receives two exciting nominations: the Emerging Artist Award for his work in member companies Boy Blue Entertainment and Russell Maliphant Company; and Outstanding Male Performance (Modern) for Blak Whyte Gray. The Trailblazers programme supports the development of artists in Dance of the African Diaspora.
The National Dance Awards ceremony will take place on Monday 19 February 2018. The recipients of the De Valois Award for Outstanding Achievement and the One Dance UK Industry Award, given in memory of Jane Attenborough, will be announced on the night.
