Nritya: Collecting the Story of Indian Dance in the Black Country 1960-2000 wins National Lottery support

Jai Jashn Dance is delighted to announce that it has received a National Lottery grant of £30,500 for an exciting heritage project, Nritya. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project focuses on collecting the Story of Indian Dance in the Black Country 1960-2000.

Supported through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Nritya explores the heritage of Indian dance (classical and traditional) in the Midlands and is led by Jai Jashn Dance.

Over the next year they will be collecting and documenting the largely unwritten and unrecorded story of Indian dance, focusing especially on the Black Country between 1960-2000 for an exhibition in Wolverhampton Art Gallery and a festival weekend of Indian dance at the Art Gallery and Arena Theatre in early summer 2020.

Jai Jashn Dance will be recruiting volunteers to help with the interviews and making contact with individuals who have memories to share for the archive. If you would like to be involved please contact Jai Jashn Dance on jaijpdc@hotmail.co.uk

At the end of the project, Jai Jashn Dance will have collected and shared these stories as well as preserved them for future generations. Everyone who has encountered it will have a better understanding of the heritage of Indian dance and an appreciation of its importance in the cultural life of the UK.

Commenting on the award, Jaivant Patel, Artistic Director of Jai Jashn Dance, said: “We are thrilled to have received this support thanks to National Lottery players and are confident the project will demonstrate the rich heritage of South Asia and its contribution to the UK’s heritage making it accessible to everyone, contributing towards greater cultural understanding.”

Vanessa Harbar, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund West Midlands said: “We’re delighted that, thanks to National Lottery players, we can support Jai Jashn Dance to explore and record this rich part of South Asian heritage, acknowledging its contribution to the region and promoting better cultural understanding in the wider community.”
