The Point, Eastleigh Announces New Artistic Director

The Point, Eastleigh and sister venue The Berry Theatre is delighted to announce the appointment of Sacha Lee as its new Artistic Director.

Sacha has been a key strategic figure at The Point as Creative Producer and Dance Programmer since the opening of the venue’s world-class Creation Space in 2009. She has driven the artist development programme, in particular the flagship Associate Artist scheme which has nurtured companies such as the award-winning Milk Presents, Joli Vyann, ZoieLogic Dance Theatre and Luke Brown Dance.

Sacha started her career working with Wayne McGregor and Random Dance and went on to become co-artistic director of Retina Dance with Filip Van Huffel, spending time in Belgium and touring Europe. Having developed major funding partners and strategic networks during her time at The Point alongside curating a programme of world-class dance, Sacha’s international work includes placing The Point at the heart of EU funded programme DanSCe Dialogues 2 and linking with Dance Exchange in Washington. Vital international work set to continue with a new Creative Europe bid for 2018.

Moving forwards Sacha will lead both venues artistically to build key links with circus, aerial and outdoor artists and networks as well as focussing on developing The Point’s strand of disability work and broadening its arts and health output. She will continue to programme high-quality work for families at The Berry Theatre along with its successful theatre and comedy programme and develop opportunities to support the creative practice of writers in the region through the venue’s Write Now programme.

Speaking about her appointment, Sacha said:

I am delighted and privileged to take on the role of Artistic Director and to have the opportunity to take The Point and The Berry Theatres on the next stage of a journey that will include more audiences, an exciting diverse programme, enabling artists to be brilliant and a quest to make The Point known on a local, regional, national and international platform”

“With a talented team behind me and amazing facilities, I’m looking forward to making sure that everyone who comes into our venues have an exhilarating experience, whether as an audience member or a participant in our creative learning programmes. We want to move people!”

Cheryl Butler, Head of Culture at Eastleigh Borough Council, commented: “We are delighted that Sacha will be taking up the post of Artistic Director. Sacha’s vision will enable us not only to deliver great art and culture for everyone, but also to continue to grow the creative sector and culture offer in Eastleigh.”

Executive Director of The Point and The Berry Theatres, Alan Wright said: “Sacha has played a critical role formulating our strategy for the next five years. She has an innate understanding of the culture of our theatres, an impressive network of contacts, and has consistently demonstrated her ability to inspire both the team here in Eastleigh responsible for delivering our outstanding offer of performance and talent development, and also the portfolio of artists we support.”

The Point, Eastleigh

The Point is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation and one of the leading venues for contemporary performance in the south. With the addition of the UK’s first fully residential Creation Space in 2009, the venue has positioned itself as an international hub for the development of artists. Its programme of professional work combines work created at the venue with ground-breaking, boundary-pushing contemporary dance, dance and aerial performance. Its Associate Artists scheme is an example of best-practice; supporting companies and performers to create risk-taking new work and sustainable careers. In addition the venue’s cross-arts Creative Learning programme engages with thousands of community members each year. Owned and managed by Eastleigh Borough Council, The Point was established in 1996 with one of the first lottery grants and has always had a strong emphasis on innovation and creative challenge.

The Berry Theatre

Since its official opening by actor and director Samuel West in April 2011, The Berry Theatre in Hedge End Hampshire has grown as a destination venue. Its professional programme places a specific focus on the development and support of new work for children and young people while its Creative Learning programme explores new ways to engage with members of the community through its new writing development programme Write Now, master-classes, technical theatre training and an audition-free Youth Theatre group. The theatre was built with investment by Eastleigh Borough Council in collaboration with Wildern School (the site on which the theatre sits), and Hedge End Town Council alongside a co-location grant from Partnership for Schools.
