Let’s Move! – a national summer school presented by The Place and DanceEast
While the pandemic has undoubtedly created very real and unique challenges for the dance sector, it has also renewed its sense of community and collaboration to find creative solutions. The Place and DanceEast are very excited to announce the first national summer school Let’s Move!, bringing together some of the UK’s leading dance artists and organisations for an online summer dance course.
DanceEast and The Place have teamed up with DanceXchange, National Dance Company Wales, Pavilion Dance South West and Phoenix Dance Theatre to bring young people aged 8 – 17 access to high quality dance training over the summer, directly at home. A vast range of dance styles will be on offer from Creative Contemporary and Hip Hop to Commercial Jazz and company repertoire workshops.
Holding the summer school online is not only a safe option, but also has the potential to reach young people internationally, promoting British dance across the world.
Lets’s Move! will take place over three days (Wed 12 – Fri 14 Aug) offering two different workshops each day, taught over Zoom.
Over the course of the week the national summer school includes:
· Daily warm-ups with all summer school participants
· Two workshops (one hour each) per day in smaller groups
· Six workshops in total (one with each of the partner organisations)
· Various tasks, challenges and activities throughout the week
· The opportunity to connect with other young dancers from across the UK
Participants will get the option to choose either
morning sessions from 9.30am – 12.30pm or
afternoon sessions from 1pm – 4pm.
Sophie Lander, Producer (Participation & Engagement), DanceEast says: ‘We are delighted to be leading on this project with The Place and working with such a brilliant range of partners from across the UK. There is no doubt that Covid 19 has created huge challenges for everyone working in the arts, it has however also created an opportunity to think differently. It is incredibly exciting to be working collaboratively with colleagues across the country to introduce young dancers to workshops and classes delivered by artists and organisations based hundreds of miles away from them. The Summer School will take them on a virtual journey around the UK and bring high-quality dance training right into their homes.’
Ashley Hind, Programme Manager Classes and Courses at The Place says: ‘I’m really excited that The Place is partnering with some incredible organisations across the UK for Let’s Move! this summer. We all have faced great challenges and changes to our lives this year, which have highlighted the importance of coming together, supporting each other, and keeping our spirits and energy up. This is exactly why we created Let’s Move!. This summer course is an opportunity for young people who enjoy dance, across the UK and indeed internationally, to connect with each other, stay active and explore their creativity, while experiencing some of the best dance workshops the UK has to offer!’
