Job Description

The Head of Communications joins us at an exciting time for South East Dance as we prepare to move into our new home The Dance Space. We are looking for a dynamic individual to realise our communications and audience development aspirations, whilst supporting the organisation to build its local, regional and national profile.

You will have a proven communications track record within the cultural sector, be confident in representing South East Dance externally and building relationships with senior level stakeholders.  You will have the experience to strategically build our communications activity through a collaborative and imaginative approach whilst possessing an enthusiasm for the contemporary arts and its ability to excite and inspire people of all ages and from a wide range of backgrounds.


The Head of Communications plays a leadership role in the strategic development of South East Dance, working closely with our Executive Director, Artistic Director and Head of Development to lead the planning, delivery and review of communications activity in an effective and integrated way.

The Head of Communications will be responsible for driving our communications and audience development activity, telling the SED story in a compelling and inspiring way that enables us to raise the profile of SED as a world-class cultural organisation within local, regional and national contexts as we pave the way to opening The Dance Space.



  1. To oversee the strategic development and implementation of SED’s communication,  audience development activity and sales strategy
  2. To promote SED and its activity in line with the vision and strategic aims outlined within our business plan
  3. To contribute at a senior level to the effective management and development of SED, ensuring our strategic aims are met

Key internal and external relationships: Executive Director, Artistic Director, Head of Development, Board of Trustees, funders and investors, project partners, dance and arts organisations, SED’s supported artists, community arts leaders, local/regional/national press, freelance consultants.



  • To develop, implement and evaluate the impact of SED’s communications, audience development and sales plans
  • To oversee the collection and interpretation of audience data (together with the Artistic Director)to inform SED’s overarching communications plans
  • To deliver and represent the vision, purpose and values of SED


 Strategic Development

To work closely with the Executive Director, Artistic Director and Senior Management Team in overseeing the delivery of SED’s business plan ensuring our strategic aims and indicators are met.


Supported by the Communications & Development Manager, to lead on the development, implementation and evaluation of all communications, marketing and sales campaigns to ensure the strategic effectiveness of resources allocated

To oversee the development, production and distribution of the highest quality printed and electronic marketing materials

To promote SED within the local Brighton community, the wider region and beyond to build awareness and understanding of SED and TDS

To ensure that SED fully utilises digital technologies to drive engagement and interaction with our online and physical audiences

To work in collaboration with Senior Management Team to take forward work on the SED re-brand

To collaborate with the Development Team to create, launch and manage ongoing communication of SED’s fundraising campaigns

Where appropriate and in conjunction with Senior Leadership Team act as the public face of SED at key events and performances, building relationships with artists, audiences, stakeholders and acting as an advocate for SED

Formulate and circulate key messages internally (Board and Team) and externally

Audience Development

To devise, implement, monitor and report against SED’s audience development strategy, working with colleagues to grow new and cultivate existing audiences in line with targets

 To lead on the development of strategies to capture, analyse and report on audience intelligence to inform the above

 To collaborate with the Development Team to oversee the management of SED’s CRM system, using data to inform communications and audience development plans


To oversee the development of a sales strategy to maximise income from studio, room and other hires in The Dance Space


To collaborate with the Executive Director and Finance Manager to agree, monitor and report on financial forecasts

Line management

To act as line manager for the Development & Communications Manager, Digital Creative, Digital Apprentice, placements and freelance personnel as defined in management policies

To set and monitor targets for the Communications & Development Manager in collaboration with the Head of Development

To develop, motivate and lead a confident and professional team, ensuring they achieve objectives and income targets

To set objectives and standards for performance whilst empowering staff to achieve their goals


To work to all legislation and company policy on equal opportunities, health and safety, safeguarding and employment law and other areas of compliance


To keep abreast of developments in the fields of communications and audience development

To attend evening and occasional week-end events which form part of SED’s key activities

To prepare Board papers and attend SED Board meetings as required

To attend local, regional and national meetings and conferences, as appropriate

To undertake any other duties as may from time to time be reasonably requested by the Executive and Artistic Directors.
