Dance Insights Online – Performance, discussion events, artistic inspirations from DanceXchange Artists in Residence

4 May 2020

Following the success of the Dance Insights event in January 2020, DanceXchange is delighted to present Dance Insights Online – a curated online programme of performances, discourse events, provocations and artistic inspirations.

The programme will be curated by DanceXchange’s 2020 Artists in Residence: Carlos Pons Guerra, Jamaal Burkmar, Johnny Autin, Shane Shambhu and Roberta Jean. Each programme will be online for two weeks and offer audiences an insight into the process and mind of the creator.

Lucie Mirkova, Head of Artistic Programmes at DanceXchange said: “In these challenging times when our arts venues and studios are closed, we are keen to find ways to continue the rich dialogue between artists and audience. Dance Insights Online offers a fascinating exploration of what inspires and interests the talented choreographers in DanceXchange’s Artists in Residence programme – an exclusive and unique opportunity to connect to the world of dance.”

First up is choreographer Carlos Pons Guerra, founder of DeNada Dance Theatre. He presents a selection of work from 27 April until 10 May, that will focus on his inspirations and life as an artist. Carlos will host an exciting programme which begins with an exclusive online premiere of his 2018 work TORO: Beauty and the Bull, a darkly erotic, Hispanic take on the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. TORO premieres on the DanceXchange website on 27 April and is available online for two weeks until 10 May.

In celebration of International Dance Day on 29 April, join Carlos for a live interview with choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa from 3.30pm – 4.30pm. Carlos and Annabelle will discuss how their Hispanic heritage influences their work, their subversion of gender roles in ballet and contemporary dance and their relationship with trash and high art! Expect a fun and camp insight into the work of both choreographers.

Following the live discussion tune in to watch an online version of Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s all-female work Les Biches, choreographed for Seattle-based company Whim W’him, and Carlos Pons Guerra’s male duet Ruffle, originally created for Rambert. The films will both be available to view until 1 May.

On 1 May tune in to DX on Spotify as Carlos shares some of the kitschiest, most melodramatic and uplifting tracks from some of his works. A mostly Latin, highly camp playlist to kick off your weekend. On 4 May Carlos will recommend six of his most influential books and inspiring films, all available to read/watch online during quarantine. Finally, on 5 May experience a day in lockdown with Carlos as he takes over the DanceXchange Instagram.
