The award-winning dance theatre company balletLORENT will mark its 25th anniversary this year with a new production, After Dark, and a career-spanning celebratory exhibition of photographs, posters, film footage and costumes.

Taking place at Northern Stage in Newcastle upon Tyne, the exhibition, 25 Years of balletLORENT, opens on Thursday 27 September and will give an insight into the workings of a successful dance theatre company; showcasing never seen before images from the balletLORENT archives.

After Dark, an intimate, cabaret-style evening of dance and music inspired by balletLORENT’s popular productions ‘la nuit intime’ and ‘The Night Ball’, takes place from 7-10 November. Featuring new choreography never seen before, After Dark will showcase balletLORENT’s hugely talented company of dancers and celebrate its heritage in the North East. The performance will also include a soundtrack of the company’s favourite music and songs.

Founded by artistic director Liv Lorent in 1993, balletLORENT has created over forty highly acclaimed productions, including its recent trilogy of classic Brothers Grimm fairytale adaptations.

While debate around ageism and sexism in fairytales has been raging in the news in the last twelve months, these are themes that balletLORENT has proactively explored in its body of work over the past six years.

Indeed its planned 2019 production is called The Lost Happy Endings – an innovative reinterpretation of childhood fairytales based on the wishes and imaginations of children themselves, drawn upon from creative sessions within schools.

Liv Lorent MBE, artistic director of balletLORENT said: “2018 is a year to reflect on a body of work that has developed over 25 years and share our story with the wider public.

“Our exhibition at Northern Stage will be an opportunity for people to relive some treasured balletLORENT moments and the performances of After Dark will put our dancers in the spotlight; many of whom have performed with us for the last 22 years.”

With its roots firmly in Newcastle upon Tyne, balletLORENT will mark its 25th anniversary at Northern Stage, a theatre it has performed in many times over the years. The company always premieres its new productions in the North East before touring them nationally and internationally.

Liv continued: “We continue to tackle contemporary and challenging themes in our work, which is something I’m very proud of. As a company we remain inclusive, diverse and welcoming to anyone interested in taking part of experiencing theatre and dance.

“I love that people remember so sharply a balletLORENT performance, even a decade later, and that it is often a beautiful and meaningful memory.”

As part of its 25th anniversary celebrations, balletLORENT has launched a Friends scheme allowing people to support future productions, the training of young dancers and the company’s expanding learning and participation programme, which has seen it engage with over 4500 children and adults, with 500 performing alongside the professional company at theatres across the UK.

Liv said: “We continue to make a difference to peoples’ lives both through the work that is watched and the opportunities to dance that we create within our work.

“As an independent dance company we are increasingly reliant on our loyal audiences and supporters to continue the work we do. Our Friends scheme is a fantastic way to ensure another 25 years of balletLORENT.”

25 Years of balletLORENT opens at the Gillian Dickinson Gallery in Northern Stage, Newcastle upon Tyne, from Thursday 27 September and runs until Saturday 10 November.

After Dark takes place at Northern Stage from 7-10 November. Tickets are priced at £25 and include a complimentary celebratory drink. The performance is suitable for audiences aged 16+ as it may contain some nudity, sexual and emotional scenes.

Tickets can be purchased online at www.northernstage.co.uk or by calling 0191 230 5151.

25 Years of balletLORENT is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
