The Next Generation – Mapping New Futures

Re:generations 2012 Conference

'Re:generations has become a key event in the process to place APD [African Peoples dance] firmly on the agenda for dance in the UK. The information & evidence gathering is such that the APD sector is becoming less marginalized. We’ve still a way’s to go but the outlook is good.'

Keeping the momentum from the first conference, 2012’s symposium entitled ‘The Next Generation – Mapping New Futures’ explored how young people and emerging artists engage with African-influenced dance and shape the future practice of these forms. Conference events included talks, demonstrations, performances and workshops engaging just over 450 academics, journalists, independent researchers, cultural organisations, professional dancers and dance students. Keynote speaker, Germaine Acogny, gave an inspiring address, charting her journey as an African dancer, choreographer and founder of L’école des Sables in Senegal; highlighting Maurice Béjart’s impact on her career and her transmission of knowledge to the next generation of artists such as UK-based choreographer, Alesandra Seutin.

Amongst the delegates, speakers and artists, 10 universities were represented: De Montfort, York St. Johns, Bedford, London Metropolitan, Canterbury Christ Church, Limerick, University of East London, State University of New York, University of Wisconsin and Temple University, Philadelphia.
