Jane Attenborough Award Winner: Val Bourne CBE
Val Bourne trained as a dancer, and came to prominence as the Artistic Director of Dance Umbrella. She has, for 28 years, been the driving force behind the festival, turning it from a fringe event into one of the largest dance festivals in the world. Amongst her many awards, Val has been awarded a CBE, received the International Theatre Institute’s award in recognition of her achievements in international dance, and the Critic’s Circle Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance.
Alistair Spalding, Chair of Dance UK and Chief Executive of Sadler’s Wells said:
‘Val’s influence on the contemporary dance field in the UK is hard to overestimate we would simply not be able to enjoy the rich variety of contemporary dance that we do today without her pioneering work at Dance Umbrella. Val’s love of contemporary dance and belief in the choreographers and dancers she has worked with has meant that she has supported them loyally through thick and thin through the 28 years of Dance Umbrella under her direction. She really deserves this honour from our industry.’
